Learn how to make a bold and beautiful Patriotic Pinwheels quilt—perfect for summer picnics, 4th of July celebrations, or just adding a fun pop of red, white, and blue to your home! This easy pattern combines simple piecing techniques with a playful pinwheel design that creates movement and charm.
Whether you’re using a curated fabric collection, working from your stash, or even mixing in a few scrappy bits, this quilt is a great way to practice half-square triangles, sew up a quilt top quickly, and make something that feels timeless.
Let’s take our blocks and put them together to make and finish the Patriotic Pinwheel Quilt!
You’ll need 13 arrow blocks and 12 double pinwheel blocks. That will give you enough blocks to have a finished quilt 65″ x 65″

Make It Your Own
Don’t feel locked into just red, white, and blue! This pattern looks fantastic in scrappy prints, holiday colors, or even soft pastels for a baby quilt.
Try a monochromatic look (all blues or all reds) or mix in fun prints like stars, polka dots, or stripes for extra flair.
If you’ve got a stack of layer cakes or charm squares in patriotic prints, this is a great way to use them up!
Materials Needed for the finishing:
20 – 2 1/2″ X 11″ background strips for in between each block sashing
6 – 2 1/2″ x 61″ background for strips in between the rows
2 – 2 1/2″ x 65″ background for the side strips

Instructions for putting the quilt together.
1- Cut a total of 20 – 2 1/2” x 11” background strips
2- Sew these strips in between the blocks, making sure they alternate
3- Sew 5 total rows together
4- Using the 6 – 61” x 2 1/2” strips, sew these in between each row
5- Using the 2 – 65” x 2 1/2” strips, sew these to the sides of the quilt top to finish

You’ll have the finished quilt top after sewing everything together!
Make sure when you lay the blocks out that they are alternating! The first row has the arrow block, second row has the double pinwheel and so on.
*if you need, square up the blocks to 11″ prior to moving onto sewing the sashing on to the blocks.
Finishing The Quilt
1. Cut or piece together your batting and a piece of quilt backing fabric.
2. Make a quilt sandwich with the backing, batting, and top.
3. Baste together with fusible batting, pins or basting spray.
3. Quilt as desired. A few of my favorite ways to quilt are Straight line quilting or cross hatch quilting. Use a walking foot on your sewing machine. Trim away the extra batting and backing.
4. Cut strips of fabric for the binding. Cut 2 1/2” tall (sometimes I use 2 1/4″) binding strips. Sew the binding strips together and bind using your favorite technique.

Finishing Touches
Once your quilt top is pieced, consider using a wavy quilting stitch or a simple straight-line design to echo the motion of the pinwheels.
For the binding, a striped or gingham fabric can add that perfect pop of detail around the quilt edge. And don’t forget—this quilt is a wonderful gift idea for military families, veterans, or anyone who loves a handmade touch of Americana.
