Free Scrappy Quilt Pattern – Cabin Under the Stars

Learn how to take your fabric scraps, combine it with a fun flower print and you are set for making a fabulous quilt. This free scrappy quilt pattern – Cabin Under the Stars is a simple quilt to sew and finish.

You’ll be using 2″, 3 1/2″ squares as well as strips of various sizes 

 Dig around your scraps and make yourself a pile of good choices. (anything will go) 

 These scraps will fill the center of the quilt. 

 The other fabric will be your ‘focus’ fabric’. 

This can also be a collection of scraps that read the same kind of value and color. 

 Lastly, you’ll want to have a flower or print fabric. 

Materials for the quilt-

 1- variety of backgrounds , can be variety of scraps 

 2- one focus fabric (my pick of focus was darker blue fabrics) 

 3- one flower / print fabric. 

 Everything else will be a mix and match of WHATEVER color, pattern, design scrap fabric you have.

7/8 yard SCRAPS
3/4 yard med / focus color- can be a collection of scraps
1/4 yard focus color -can be a collection of scraps
3 yard light SCRAPS
1 1/8 yard focus color – can be a collection of scraps
5/8 yard flower or print fabric

Cabin Under the Stars Quilt Instructions

You are going to begin sewing the four patch units to begin with – it’s simple to sew. After that, you are going to sew the flying geese units (somewhat similar to this block). These are what makes the points for the star.

Lastly you’ll sew the log cabin blocks which are the center of the star. This is the best block to use your random strips of fabric waiting for something fun. If you’d like, you can purchase the full pattern here.

Four Patch blocks

Cut List for 16 blocks:

Background:
32- 3 ½” X 3 1/2”
64 – 2” X 2”

Scraps in your main color:
64 – 2” X 2”

Instructions:

1- Sew you four patch units together with the background squares
opposite each other. Repeat until you have 32 four patch units
2- Lay the block out as seen in the picture
3- Sew two rows together using the background squares and four
patch units
4- Sew the two rows together
Square up to 6 ½ X 6 ½
Repeat until you have 16 blocks complete

Log cabin with 4 patch center

Cut List for 9 blocks
Random and scrappy strips. They can be any width and length.
You’ll want to keep them separated by value.

Instructions:
1- Start the center of the log cabin with a 4 patch. If you
don’t have one, you can either make one or just do a solid
square – this can be from 2” – 3” finished
2- Start sewing around the center of the log cabin, keeping
to the same tone on two sides
3- Continue until your block measures 13” X 13”
4- Square up your block to measure 12 1/2” square
Repeat until you have 9 large blocks

Hints and tips:
● If your strips aren’t long enough, sew two together to
get the length you need. Because the log cabin is
scrappy, it will blend right in. Try to keep the same
value
● All the strips can be different widths. This is time to use
up those scrappy strips that don’t fit into any projects.

Outer Block Star Point Units:

A- Light main color- 12 — 7 1/4” X 7 1/4” *cut twice from corner to corner so you end up with 4 triangles for each square

B – Main color- 24 — 7” X 7” *cut once from corner to corner so you end up with 2 triangles for each square

C- Patterned fabric– 24 – 4 3/4” X 4 3/4”

Instructions:

1. Sew the light main color triangles to two sides of the 4
   3/4” square
2. Sew the large main color triangles to both sides of the
   unit from step 1
3. Press well and trim to 6 1/2” x 12 1/2”
4. Repeat for a total of 24 units
5. Square up to 6 ½ X 12 ½

Quilt Top Construction

1. Lay the quilt top out, using the log cabin, four patch and flying geese units
2. Sew the rows together

Optional Border – Cut List

2 – 1 1/2” X 62 1/2”
2- 1 1/2” X 60 1/2 “

1. Sew the 60 1/2” strips to the sides of the quilt top
2. Sew the 62 1/2” strips to the top and bottom

Finishing The Quilt

1. Cut or piece together your batting and a piece of quilt backing fabric.

2. Make a quilt sandwich with the backing, batting, and top.

3. Baste together with fusible batting, pins or basting spray.

3. Quilt as desired. A few of my favorite ways to quilt are Straight line quilting or cross hatch quilting. Use a walking foot on your sewing machine. Trim away the extra batting and backing.

4. Cut strips of fabric for the binding. Cut 2 1/2” tall (sometimes I use 2 1/4″) binding strips. Sew the binding strips together and bind using your favorite technique.
