Learn how to take your collection of squares, add a background and after sewing, you’ll get a super cute baby quilt eye spy!
I took 50 5″ squares and 50 5″ background squares and made an eye spy baby quilt! This is super cute and a great way to use those fun prints that you’ve collected over the years.
Each square gives you 2 – half square triangles, so you can search the quilt for the matching pair.

Materials Needed:
50 – 5″ x 5″ squares of fun fabric
50 – 5″ x 5″ background fabric
For the fun fabric, dig through your stash and find some fun prints. Those prints that don’t really match anything in your stash or you bought them just for fun.

I used 50 different fabrics. This was a gift from a friend, which was soooo fun to get! If you don’t have that many different squares, you can swap squares with other quilt friends. We have swaps inside Patchworkers Plus – and we have swapped charm packs before too. It’s an easy way to get a variety of fabrics.
If you don’t have the charm squares, you can always cut your own.

Eye Spy Baby Quilt Instructions
1- Draw a line on the wrong side of the background squares from corner to corner

2- Lay right sides together, 1 fun fabric square and 1 background fabric

3- Sew 1/4″ on both sides of the drawn line. Cut on the drawn line

4- Press the blocks open to the dark side

5- Trim up the squares

6- Lay the half square triangles out in 10 rows of 10 squares in each row.
When you lay them out, just double check that you don’t have two squares that are the same next to each other. Sometimes they sneak together and you don’t catch it until it’s too late, so double check!
-for this quilt, I did bring the backing fabric to the front for the binding. It does finish the quilt pretty quickly.

Quilting the Baby Quilt
Here’s a look at the quilting that I decided to do for the Eye Spy Baby Quilt. Super simple and nothing fancy over here! I went for an allover quilting design.
A double loop that moves around like a meander design. I did think about a swirl flower, but went with the little double loop and meander instead. Plus, the swirl flower may be too girly – while this quilt isn’t really boy or girl, I did want to keep it optional depending on who is using it.
I used white thread to keep it simple as well – nothing colored. It blended in great and was really quick to machine quilt on the longarm.
Finishing the Quilt
1. Cut or piece together your batting and a piece of quilt backing fabric.
2. Make a quilt sandwich with the backing, batting, and top.
3. Baste together with fusible batting, pins or basting spray.
3. Quilt as desired. A few of my favorite ways to quilt are Straight line quilting or cross hatch quilting. Use a walking foot on your sewing machine. Trim away the extra batting and backing.
4. Cut strips of fabric for the binding. Cut 2 1/2” tall (sometimes I use 2 1/4″) binding strips. Sew the binding strips together and bind using your favorite technique.
