A leash is a must have for any pet owner– and even pets need a little bit of something extra special sometimes.
Sew up a leash using your scrap ribbon and fabric for a customized leash for your favorite pet.
How to sew a dog leash
Looking for a fun and practical sewing project that’s as easy as it is rewarding? How about crafting a homemade dog leash using fabric scraps and ribbon strips?
This simple DIY project allows you to create a personalized leash for your furry friend while making use of materials you already have on hand.
To get started, gather your fabric scraps and ribbon strips. You can choose any colors or patterns that you and your dog love, making each leash unique and stylish.
Materials Needed:
- ribbon scraps 1/4″ wide X any length
- fabric- 28 3″ X 6″
- swivel clip – or here (link is to a different style, but will work just fine)
Dog Leash Tutorial:
Sew your fabric pieces end to end so you have one long piece
1) Fold in half and iron
2) Fold the sides in -meeting in the center and iron
3) Fold in half and iron
4) Tuck the ends in and iron
5) Sew down both sides of the leash
6) Taking your ribbon scraps- sew them end to end to make a long as long as your leash piece
7) Place in the center of the leash and sew down both sides- tuck under the ends, hiding the raw edge
8) Slip swivel clip in one end, folding up the leash and sew to secure
9) Handle– Fold the other end over 8″ and sew to secure
Finally, give your new homemade dog leash a test run with your furry friend!
Not only will you have a functional and stylish accessory for walks, but you’ll also have the satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself.
So gather those fabric scraps and ribbon strips, fire up your sewing machine, and get ready to create a leash that’s as unique as your canine companion!

Love this idea as we foster dogs and I could make each their own leash and let the new owners take them with them. I ‘ve been looking around for the swivel clip you have in the picture and haven’t seen anything like it anywhere. Could you share where you got them?
