I was thinking that I had this big piece of horribly pieced quilt blocks sitting around…waiting, waiting. Today I decided to cut it up {agasp} and use it for a new dog pillow cover for Daisy.
I mean, really everyone in the house has at least 3 quilts each…why doesn’t the dog have one? She loves her new digs. She must love quilts too.
Sewing projects for dogs and other animals is a great way to use your leftover scraps, make something cute and you’ll love customizing it for your own pet.
When it comes to pampering your pooch, a homemade dog bed is the ultimate comfort statement. Crafting your own dog bed allows you to tailor it to your furry friend’s specific needs and preferences.
You can choose the perfect size, shape, and materials to ensure maximum coziness and durability.
From simple pillow beds to more elaborate designs with bolsters or removable covers for easy washing, the possibilities are endless.
Plus, sewing your dog’s bed from scratch can be a rewarding and budget-friendly project that strengthens the bond between you and your canine companion.
Dog beds really don’t have to be complicated. They can be sewn up using shirts, tattered quilts, jeans or whatever fabric you have on hand.
A lot of shelters even stuff the dog beds with tiny bits of fabric scraps that they collect from quilters.
The trick really is that they need to hold up to the digging that the dogs usually do to get comfortable and be washable.
Materials Needed
- Backing fabric
- Polyfil stuffing
- Quilt blocks for the top
How to make a dog bed
Step 1- First up you need to find and gather a lot of UFO Quilt Blocks. They can be from whatever project, because seriously what is the dog going to know?
Step 2- I simply laid the old pillow on top of the fabric and cut around it– the bottom piece is cut about the same size as the dog pillow.
The quilt block pieced top fabric I cut about 3″ larger because then it can go down the sides to the bottom piece.
Step 3- Then I did a quick gathering stitch around the outside edge of the larger circle. Pull the strings and gather that puppy until it is really close to the same size as the smaller circle.
Step 4 – Pin the edge together- right sides facing.
Step 5- Sew all the way around, leaving a good sized opening for turning and stuffing
Step 6 – Turn and stuff– or just take the older dog pillow and stuff it right into the new lining!
Step 7- Hand stitch the opening closed.
Let Daisy {or your dog of course} try it out–

that’s too funny- they do tend to hang out with us a bit more than their own spots!

Love the bed. I will have to make one for my Daisy. She looks just like your dog with longer hair.
