The flag quilt is such a classic pattern. It’s perfect for not only the season of the holiday – 4th of July, but this type of quilt also is great for Quilts of Valor quilts.
All the American Flag Sewing Projects are free as well – have fun sewing.
No matter if you are using your scrap bin or a fabric line – keeping with the red, white and blue, it’s great for keeping fabric selection simple and quick.
You’ll notice that there are quilts, table runners, wall hangings and pillows… it’s a great way to mix and match and add a lot of patriotic themed projects to your home.
These quilts are really about showing off the United States Flag. With white stripes, red strips, long stripes, short stripes, large flag, blue section, red stripe, they can be combined for an amazing project.
You’ll find wavy lines, five-pointed star, you’ll maybe repeat rows, the free pattern will give you a variety of it all!
For the quilting – explore using blue thread, invisible thread (so it’s all about the piecing), red thread, white thread – try it out.
Sometimes the extra color in the quilting adds something fun to the quilt. Also, maybe look at large quilting stitches to show off that thread. (check out the best needle threader and thread for hand sewing here)
Recently I tried out the Sashiko stitch using my sewing machine. This would be really fun to add to the quilt as well. Perfect for outlining those stars or just adding wave stitches to the stripes.
10+ American Flag Sewing Projects
The American Flag Quilt Tutorial measures 39″ x 51″ and is made of 4″ x 4″ finished (4 ½″ x 4 ½″ unfinished) squares and a little bit of yardage for borders and binding. I personally think the scrappier the better when it comes to this quilt.
The Star Spangled Pineapple Quilt uses 5 fat quarters: 3 red and 2 blue. Add in 2 1/2 yards of light to medium chambray and you’re ready to get going!! Don’t you just love the background fabric? Great contrast with the white strips.
Flag Quilt as You Go Pillow Learn the quilt as you go technique with this flag pillow tutorial. Great for the 4th of July or summer decoration. Great for using your scrappy strips of fabric – plus, when you are finished with the pillow, it’s quilted as well.
The Flag Wreath features 6″ x 6″ squares of red, white and blue fabric. Using pins and a wreath form, you’ll have this flag project done in a jiffy.
The Star and Stripes free pattern table runner comes together pretty quickly – I promise! The stripe blocks are made with strip piecing, and the stars are raw edge appliqued with the help of your favorite fusible web product. The table runner finishes at 12″ x 36″, and if you’d prefer a wall hanging, make three of the table runners and sew them together to make a 36″ x 36″ wall hanging.
Stars Quilt Pattern This is probably the most basic star block. But it is a classic favorite that looks good in any fabric, and is easy to re-size to make smaller or larger.
Let Freedom Ring by Riley Blake uses four flag blocks to make a larger quilt. Add a border or two to make it the size you are needing. Perfect for a baby quilt or wall hanging.
Grand Old Flag from Windham Fabrics

This simple flag quilt features nine wonky or liberated star quilt blocks with simple strips of red and white. You can vary your strips (great for using your scraps) or use a jelly roll.
