This block has all the cozy, crisp-vibes I love when fall rolls around. Whether it’s the changing leaves or just the excuse to pull out rich, warm fabrics from your stash, the Delectable Mountains quilt block is one of those classics that never gets old.
In this version, I played with earthy tones and subtle contrast to give it a fresh seasonal feel—perfect for a fall-themed quilt or a simple table runner.
If you’ve never sewn this block before, don’t worry—it looks fancy but it’s actually pretty simple to piece together.
You’ll just need some half square triangles and a little slicing and swapping to make those lovely peaks and valleys.
Ready to try it? Let’s sew up something beautiful together!

What I love most about this block is how flexible it is—you’re just starting with two squares of fabric, and the size is totally up to you.

You’ll make a simple half square triangle first, and then slice it up to create the mountain peaks.
It’s such a fun and easy way to play with contrast and color, and no two blocks ever turn out exactly the same. Total win in my book!

This ends up as a 12 1/2″ X 12 1/2″ unfinished quilt block.
*the block from the Fat Quarter will be around 15 1/2″ x 17 1/2″ – It it NOT square!!!
Now, typically the delectable mountain is a rectangular shaped quilt block. Not at all square. After a bit of trial and error I finally came up with a solution to get it back to the square– by adding a strip right in the middle. Just looks like a super tall mountain!
It really is super easy to sew….
Let’s get to the tutorial and sew up your own autumn delectable mountain quilt block!
Cutting Instructions:
Cut 4 squares 7″ X 7″ you will need one dark and one light– mountain and background. I used 2 different lights and 2 different darks
Cut 4 — 2 1/2″ X 6 1/2″ strips from the dark fabric {2 of each dark fabric}
Making the Delectable Mountain Quilt Block with a Fat Quarter-
1- Cut your fat quarter into a square, 18″ x 18″
2- Follow the below instructions to complete the block
3- Sew up 16 blocks to make the quilt top featured in the tutorial
Block Instructions:
1) Draw a line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the lighter fabric
2) Lay one light square on dark square

3) Sew on each side of the drawn line 1/4″ from the line

4) Cut down drawn line. You will have 4 half square triangles

5) Square up each block to 6 1/2″ X 6 1/2″
6) Lay the half square triangles right sides together- lights and darks are opposite each other ( you can cut them separately, just know you have to watch the angle of the seam so you end up with opposite blocks)

6) Cut them into 1 1/2″ strips- make sure you are cutting the correct direction! (3 1/2″ strips if using the larger square from fat quarter)

7) Re-arrange the order of the strips so they will make a delectable mountain
8) Sew dark 2 1/2″ strips to the tallest mountain – to make the block square (this is not used in the finished quilt top)

9) Layout the 4 blocks and sew together

Finishing The Quilt
1. Cut or piece together your batting and a piece of quilt backing fabric.
2. Make a quilt sandwich with the backing, batting, and top.
3. Baste together with fusible batting, pins or basting spray.
3. Quilt as desired. A few of my favorite ways to quilt are Straight line quilting or cross hatch quilting. Use a walking foot on your sewing machine. Trim away the extra batting and backing.
4. Cut strips of fabric for the binding. Cut 2 1/2” tall (sometimes I use 2 1/4″) binding strips. Sew the binding strips together and bind using your favorite technique.
Here’s a look at the quilting design – I did an angle triangles

Finished Delectable Mountains Quilt Block~

This block is sewn together without that extra strip of fabric at the end of the block. (in the center)

For a scrappy version you can mix up the strips with each other….or you can lay them out in a different direction for a V look. You play and find out what works for you.
