If you’ve got fabric scraps or leftover pieces from other projects, this is a great way to use them. Each side of the block can be a different fabric, making it easy to mix colors, prints, and textures.
You can even add simple details like ribbons or different fabrics to make them more interesting for kids.
These soft toy blocks are quick to sew and make thoughtful handmade gifts for babies, toddlers, or little ones in your life. Whether you’re making just one or a whole set, they’re a fun project that doesn’t take a lot of time but gives you something special when you’re done.
DIY Soft Fabric Baby Blocks Sewing Tutorial – Great gift idea!
After digging through the drawer of orphan quilt blocks I found a bunch of half square triangles that were all the same size. These are perfect to make some squishy toy blocks out of!
The corners aren’t at all perfect, but since a little munchkin will probably be eating them, it doesn’t really matter.
I wasn’t too worried about what size they were- if you look at your blocks, they will tell you how big your block will be. You will just need to make sure that they are all the same size.
This would be fun to make out of ‘eye spy’ fabric too….. the possibilities are endless!

Soft Toy Blocks Tutorial~
Materials needed per soft block:
- 6– same sized quilt blocks
- Polyfil stuffing

- Trim or square up your quilt blocks so they are all the same size. I had 3 1/2″ half square triangle blocks and used those. Super easy!
- Sew 4 squares in a row
- Sew one square on top of the row. To make the next step easier, stop and start your sewing 1/4″ from each end
- Sew a second square on the bottom of the row- direct opposite of the step 3 square
- Fold the long strip together and sew the ends- you will end up with a tube
- Pin one side of the top square to one side of the long strip….kind or confusing here, but play around with placement and think like a box
- Sew all the way around the square
- Repeat with the square on the other side– leaving a 2″ opening for turning {the corners will be tricky, keep the needle down while fiddling with re-aligning the next side}
- Turn right sides out
- Stuff firmly with polyfil
- Stitch the opening closed {use the ladder stitch– it’s easy!}
This would be a great little present if you made a bunch that were different sizes too— they don’t always have to match! Plus, the different sizes will get those little fingers moving
