Learn how to sew simple quilt block pattern weights that are both useful and a fun way to use your fabric scraps. These little weights are perfect for holding fabric in place while cutting or tracing patterns—and they’re a great alternative to using pins.
This is one of those small projects that you’ll reach for over and over again once you have them. They’re quick to sew, don’t require much fabric, and are a great way to use leftover quilt blocks or small pieces from your stash.
If you’ve never used pattern weights before, you might be surprised how helpful they are. They keep your fabric flat and steady while you cut, which can make the whole process smoother and a little more accurate. Plus, they’re easy to customize with different fabrics, sizes, or weights depending on what you need.
One thing that I ran into having some issues with was –besides finding a space large enough to lay the fabric out and the pattern, was the straight pins! They are everywhere! They poke your fingers…get in the way of everything. The scissor hits them because they are facing the wrong way– or the big head is right where you need to cut. The issues are endless with those things.
I found that I was looking for something heavy just to set on the pattern piece to keep it from shifting long enough to cut out. This got me thinking that those little quilt blocks are perfect for making a few of these to have on hand.

Pattern Weight Tutorial
I have found that even if you are not sewing clothing – these weights can be placed on your ruler when you are cutting. They give the ruler a bit of weight keeping it from shifting.
These work really well if you are cutting with the mega long ruler. Put these at the end so the ruler doesn’t shift before you even get there to cut.
Materials needed:
2 quilt blocks around 4″ X 4″ each
Heavy rocks- decorator style or from your backyard {cleaned}
Batting bits

Pattern Weight Instructions:
1) Pin right sides together the two quilt blocks.

2) Sew all the way around leaving 1 side open
3) Turn right sides out
4) Place rock on batting piece and wrap around rock
5) Stuff into block pouch. Stuff corners with additional batting if needed

6) Fold the extra fabric inside and hand stitch the side opening with a ladder stitch.
