What size quilt does this free pattern make?
After you sew the quilt blocks and make your rows – then put them into a complete quilt, you’ll end up with a quilt that finishes at around 50″ x 60″. It’s perfect for snuggling on the couch, hanging on the wall, or making it into a sweet baby quilt.
How to Choose the Right Fabric for this Quilt
You’ll find that using a layer cake is perfect for this quilt pattern. If you have a lot of fabric stash in your sewing room, feel free to cut your own layer cake pieces. If you do this – I would cut 9″ x 9″ squares as you don’t need to trim them down before beginning with the 3″ cuts.
Nine Patch Quilt Pattern using a Layer Cake
You’ll be cutting two blocks at a time – which will give you two finished quilt blocks after you flip the fabric pieces and shuffle things around. This really makes the quilt sew up quickly.
YOU WILL NEED:
- One Layer Cake – 42 pieces of 10″ x 10″
- OR MAKE YOUR OWN 9″ x 9″ squares of 42 different fabrics (it’s ok to use duplicate squares too)
- Rotating cutting mat if you’d like
CUTTING:
- To begin, you’ll want to trim the layer cake squares into 9″ x 9″ – this goes pretty quickly as you’ll be trimming off the edges which have the pinking shears. Removing the pinking shears edge allows you to have clear cuts and measurements. Your blocks will end up really nice in the end, so while it’s a little wasteful your quilt will be easier to finish.
Quilt Piecing Tips
Use a 1/4’’ seam allowance and a regular stitch length such as 2 – 2.5
How to Sew the Nine Patch Quilt Blocks:
Step 1 – Layer two squares together, right sides can face up if you’d like. I used a rotating cutting mat to make cutting super quick and easy.
Step 2- Measure three inches on the left and cut
Step 3- Rotate the cutting mat
Step 4- Continue cutting three inches, rotating the cutting mat and cutting three inches again until you have nine squares total
Step 5- Remove the top squares from the four corners and the center square
Step 6- Remove the bottom squares from the four other spots
Step 7- You’ll have two quilt blocks
Step 8- Sew the squares together to make three rows.
Step 9- Press the rows so they are opposite the next row. Top row is pressed to the right, middle row is pressed to the left and the bottom row is pressed to the right.
Step 10- Sew the rows together
Step 11- You’ll have two completed quilt blocks.
Repeat this with the other 9 inch squares until you have all your 42 blocks finished.
Assemble the Nine Patch Quilt
I didn’t use a sashing in between the blocks. I simply sewed the blocks together side by side. I also mixed and matched the blocks trying to keep the two that are similar away from each other.
Play with the blocks before sewing them together.
Step 1 – Lay the blocks out into seven rows of six blocks in each row
Step 2 – Sew the rows together
Finishing the Quilt
1. Cut or piece together your batting and a piece of quilt backing fabric.
2. Make a quilt sandwich with the backing, batting, and top.
3. Baste together with fusible batting, pins or basting spray.
3. Quilt as desired. A few of my favorite ways to quilt are Straight line quilting or cross hatch quilting. Use a walking foot on your sewing machine. Trim away the extra batting and backing.
4. Cut strips of fabric for the binding. Cut 2 1/2” tall (sometimes I use 2 1/4″) binding strips. Sew the binding strips together and bind using your favorite technique.
