This year I have teamed up with Cheryl (she has been a past guest designer for the iaquilters online quilt group, and we have teamed up in the past to do a few fun things as well! So excited to be part of this group of designers and the rows so far are wonderful….I’m thinking you’ll want to sew along with us!
The idea was to design a row with the theme:
In My Neighborhood Row by Row Quilt Along
Love that theme! I did a quilt along a year or so ago and it was Around the Block. (all the steps are still up for that one, just in case you are interested in sewing it up).
It was so much fun to see everyone’s ideas and thoughts and styles + the designs they chose! This quilt along is a little bit different as it’s a row by row quilt. So by the end, you’ll need to sew the rows together and your top is done! It’s kind of nifty like that.
Here’s the row I designed~
You can find the instructions and pattern here!
Here are the rows so far:
Row #1: the houses & trees
Row #2: the pinwheels and flowers
Row #3: the funky baskets
Here are some hints when you are making your funky basket quilt blocks:
1- use ric rac for the handles. You can use bias tape, but I found it kind of time consuming and I wasn’t up for it, so I dug through my ric rac drawer.
2- use glue to tack the basket handles down. They need to stay put while you stitch the block pieces together, so use something to keep it in place. I used a fine tip on the Elmer’s Glue.
3- you will have extra pieces! It’s ok. I know this is a little bit of waste here, but save them for later rows– we are just getting started here, so I’m pretty sure there will be an opportunity or two to get them used.
4- go for funky angles! Don’t just cut your pieces straight up and down. Go for fun shapes that will add interest to your rows. It’s so fun to sew them together and see how they all come together. Relax and go for it.
