To keep the raw edges around the zipper under control {I hate it when the zipper gets stuck because of thread!} I used a wider ribbon around the zipper.

This makes the process go quicker and so much less raw edges!

I also used 5″ squares from a charm pack, but feel free to use one piece of fabric for those sections.  I didn’t use a stabilizer or another lining fabric.

I was happy with a little floppy zipper pouch- it easily conforms to the contents of the binder, but if you’d like something a little firmer, you are more then welcome to do so.

Materials for the  ring binder pouch:

7″ zipper

2– 1 1/2″ X 9 ribbon

4– 1 1/2″ X 2″ ribbon

3– 1″ X 2″ ribbon

3- rings

7″ X 9″ mesh or clear plastic- pocket

8– 5″ squares fabric- inside and backside of pouch

How to Make a 3 Ring Binder Pouch

1)  Sew 4-  5″ X 5″ squares together to make a 4 patch.

Repeat with the other 4 squares.  Square up to 9″ X 9″

2)  Fold in half the 1 ” X 2″ ribbon, tucking the rings inside and sewing to secure

3)  Sew the rings with the ribbon at the bottom of one four patch square– one ring centered at the seam for the 4 patch, and the end rings are placed 1/2″ from the edges so they don’t get caught in the seams.

4)  Sandwich the zipper ends in between two 1 1/2″ X 2″ ribbon pieces.  Sew across the top and iron back

5)  Repeat step 4 with the other zipper end

6)  Place the long ribbon strip along one side of the zipper

7)  Sew the ribbon to the zipper.

8)  Repeat step 6 with the other side of the zipper

9)  Place the mesh or clear plastic under the bottom of the zipper piece, over lapping 1/4″

10)  Sew in place

11)  Trim the zipper and mesh/plastic section to 9″ X 9″

12) Layer the pieces- 4 patch, mesh and zipper section, 4 patch.  Make sure the rings are at the opposite end of the zipper!

13)  Sew all the way around the pouch, leaving a 3″ opening on the side for turning

14)  Snip corners and turn right sides out

15)  Sew all the way around the pouch 1/8″ closing the hole used for turning

16)  Hook to binder.  The rings at the bottom make it so it will fit any size of binder.  They adjust with the fixed rings easily.
