A little bit ago I shared the sewing machine cover from a quilt block challenge we had in one of my quilt groups. For fun, Angie and I had made a bunch of small quilts with orphan quilt blocks. They were the cutest!
Angie had a bunch of little wood hangers made for each and they lined the table for our dinner party. At the end of the party everyone got to take one home. I chose a blue one- big surprise there. If your quilt blocks aren’t perfectly pieced sew a few buttons stratigically placed….yeah I do that too.
This is a great project for those orphan quilt blocks that you have sitting around that are around the size of 6-9 inches. You can use smaller ones– like the teal half square triangle one on the left and add a border around it to make it just a bit bigger and usable. This is a super easy sewing project. No, really it is.
Materials needed:
1 quilt block
backing the same size as the quilt block
batting
Instructions to sew the small quilt:
1) Lay wrong sides facing the quilt top and back
2) Slip in between the two pieces batting and pin all layers
3) Quilt- you can stitch in the ditch, meander, just keep it simple. We quilted around the log cabin squares with a straight stitch. No fancy quilting foot needed!
4) Sew your binding on
5) Display
Small Quilt Hangers- These are fairly easy to do if you have a handy man close by. The sides are dowels and are spaced, I think 7″ apart. You might want to adjust this size if you are making larger small quilts. Drill small holes through the top of each dowel
The bottom board is a 1″ X 2″ and is cut 2 1/2 ” larger than you want to space the dowels. Drill a hole at each end partially through. Glue and shove the dowels inside the hole. Let dry and paint.
Thread some just string through the hole at the top of the dowel and tie in a knot. Useing little cute clothes pins, hang your mini quilt.

Those are so cute Becky. What a great idea. I can’t get over how many ideas you keep coming up with to use these quilt blocks.
thanks Deby! It is kind of surprising to see what there is you can do with them.
So cute. Thanks for the quilt holder. I think I can easily remember this – it is so easy. Often the display is harder to make or more expensive to buy than the art itself.
