What is a quilt label
Quilt labels are small pieces of fabric that serve as personal signatures for quilts. They contain important information such as the name of the quilt maker, the date the quilt was completed, and sometimes additional details about the quilt or its recipient.
These labels are typically attached to the back of the quilt and provide a permanent record of the quilt’s creation, ensuring that the maker’s identity and the story of the quilt are preserved for future generations to appreciate.
Quilt labels add a special touch to quilting projects, making them not only beautiful works of art but also meaningful heirlooms with a story to tell.
Options for making your own label – quilt label ideas:
1- A simple hand-embroidered of your initials and the year finished is a great place to start. You can make your own design.
2- Use a zig pen, fabric pens or sharpie marker to write the info for the year. It just needs to be permanent ink. If you have a inkjet printer, you could also use printable fabric sheets to make your own quilt label.
3- Use a printed tag is totally an option. You can make your own or you can buy custom labels. This would be a twill tape label.
4- Corner label with marker is a great way to do your label as well. Learn how to do a corner label here.
Why Quilt Labels Matter
Quilt labels serve as a permanent record of who lovingly crafted the quilt, the date it was completed, and sometimes even the heartfelt reasons behind its creation.
They add a personal touch to your quilts, preserving your unique quilting legacy for future generations to cherish.
Typically they are put on the backing fabric, but I have seen a few on the front as well.
Label information:
Your name or quilting alias ensures your personal connection to the quilt is remembered.
The completion date provides a snapshot in time of when your masterpiece came to life.
Any special details, like the quilt’s name or the recipient’s name, add a touch of warmth and meaning. Optionally, you can include your city, state, or country for a little extra flair.
Depending on the quilt, you can add additional care instructions.
I know of some quilters who make a special poem or have all the important details on a separate piece of paper that goes along with the beautiful quilts.
Making Quilt Labels:
Use fabric scraps or specially designed quilt label fabric for your label base.
Handwrite or embroider the information onto the label using permanent fabric markers, embroidery floss, or pigma micron pens.
Consider adding decorative elements, such as appliqué or fabric embellishments, to infuse your label with personality. In additional to making your own, you can use an extra block from the front.
If you have a ink jet printer, you can use a piece of freezer paper as well. I’ve even seen some beautiful labels made with the embroidery machine.
There are so many creative ways to make a special label!
Attaching Quilt Labels:
Sew the label onto the back of the finished quilt before binding, ensuring it’s securely nestled among the layers. Alternatively, use fusible web or fabric glue to affix the label to the quilt back with ease.
Ensure the label is firmly attached to withstand the test of time, including repeated washing and handling.
By following these simple steps, you can create and attach quilt labels that add a personal touch to your quilting projects and ensure your hard work is never forgotten.
