I’ve always loved a good bucket hat. It’s one of those fun and functional accessories that work for almost any season, whether you’re shielding yourself from the summer sun or adding a little flair to your fall wardrobe. And the best part? You can make it reversible! That means two hats in one—who doesn’t love that?
Using the AccuQuilt bucket hat die makes the process even smoother. If you’re anything like me, you appreciate anything that speeds up the cutting process and keeps those shapes accurate. Plus, it’s perfect for using up some of those fabric scraps we all have tucked away in our stashes.

I’m going to walk you through the key takeaways of sewing a reversible bucket hat.
You’ll find the step-by-step process in the video I’ve created, so feel free to check that out when you’re ready to dive in. Let’s talk about why this project is such a winner!

Key Takeaways:
- Perfect for Scrap Fabric: Because you’re making a reversible hat, you can use two different fabrics—ideal for all those scraps in your stash that you can’t quite part with! Mix and match colors, prints, or even textures.
- Reversible Fun: Get creative by switching up the look with just a flip. It’s like having two different hats, which makes it super versatile for any wardrobe.
- Accurate, Fast Cutting: Using the AccuQuilt bucket hat die ensures all your pieces are cut perfectly. No more worrying if the crown or brim is off by a smidge, which is especially handy when working with curves.
- Beginner-Friendly: Despite looking fancy, a reversible bucket hat is actually quite simple to sew. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or still consider yourself a newbie, this project is a great skill-builder.
- Customizable Fit: Hats can be tricky when it comes to sizing, but the beauty of making your own is you can adjust it for the perfect fit. You can tweak the size a bit by adjusting your seam allowances.

Materials Needed:
- lining fabric for the bucket hat
- outside fabric
- interfacing if you need (if you aren’t using thicker fabric, you’ll need it for more structure)
- AccuQuilt die for the bucket hat
I used corduroy for one of the fabrics, so I didn’t use an interfacing. For the outside I picked a cotton that was from a pair of pants I picked up at a thrift store.
It was REALLY SIMPLE to sew!
I had tried to make a bucket hat before, but with the templates it really didn’t work out. In fact, I didn’t even finish the hat! I’m pretty sure I tossed the pieces and gave up the idea of making a bucket hat.
Using the die it was seriously sooo simple! It took me around 40 minutes to actually sew it. It will take you a few minutes to pick your favorite fabric for the hat, but once you have the pieces cut out using the die – you’ll be sewing it soo quickly.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What kind of fabric works best for a reversible bucket hat?
You’ll want to use medium-weight cotton or linen for a nice structure. Quilting cotton is great because it’s sturdy enough to hold the shape, yet comfortable to wear. Feel free to experiment with canvas or denim for a more structured look. For one side, you can even try something fun like a print, and on the other, a solid color to keep it neutral.
Do I need to use interfacing?
Interfacing isn’t a must, but it’s helpful if you want a stiffer brim. If you prefer a more floppy, casual look, you can skip it. However, if you’re using lightweight fabric, you might want to add a bit of interfacing just to give the hat some body.
How can I adjust the size of the hat?
The AccuQuilt die is designed for a standard size, but you can adjust the fit slightly by altering the seam allowances. A larger seam allowance will make the hat smaller, and a smaller one will give you a bit more room. Also, consider the thickness of your fabric—a thicker fabric will result in a snugger fit.
Can I add a chin strap or other embellishments?
Absolutely! You can sew on a chin strap or add fun extras like decorative stitching, patches, or even some embroidery to personalize your hat. Since it’s reversible, just make sure anything you add looks good on both sides.
Is it washable?
Yes! As long as you’ve chosen washable fabrics, you can toss your reversible bucket hat in the wash. I recommend washing on a gentle cycle and air-drying to keep it looking its best.

So there you have it—a fun and easy project that’s perfect for any season. I love the versatility of a reversible hat, and with the help of the AccuQuilt die, it’s a breeze to put together. Be sure to check out the video tutorial for all the details, and happy sewing!
