I am very excited to share something that has been brewing in the background for a bit.
After looking at my goals for the 2023 year… one that always tends to show up is health. Of course. Like many quilters, movement pretty much includes walking to the sewing machine, walking to the cutting mat, walking to the ironing station.
Well, it’s time to maybe do a little bit of intentional walking somewhere other than our ‘go to’ route.
This is NOT about losing weight.
It’s simply about moving and of course sewing.
It’s about consistency.
Consistently getting your walking in – every day.
AND – Consistently getting your sewing in – every day.
Neither of them taking too long, so they are very doable in squeezing into your possibly already tight schedule.
I’m thinking 30 minutes to 1 hour. For each task.
30 minutes of walking.
30 minutes of sewing (but we all know we will squeeze in more minutes if possibly once we get started!)
I began with a super cute sampler quilt… but after much thought, it changed into a Walkabout Quilt.
In one of my past neighborhoods, they would hold a walkabout in the evening. So you could have a stroll around the neighborhood and visit with others. Some would offer lemonade on the porch or a cookie or two.
It was a great opportunity to just get out of the house and visit for a some minutes.
This lead me to design the quilt with quilt blocks that would maybe show off what you are going to see along your walkabout.
Houses – of different styles, designs.
Flowers, trees of course.
Then I tossed in some traditional blocks – but they still represented walkabout items…. like flying geese, a star you may see in the evening if this is your walking time. Rail fence – to represent either fences, sidewalks, or railways. Flower pinwheels. You get the idea.
For me the most important part is to invite others to join me. Community. Quilting community to be more specific.
So, here we are.
I’m inviting you to walk and sew along with me for a few weeks.
Every weekday we will be sewing something. Sewing a block that belong in the row.
Every day you’ll get an email with the daily ‘to do’. Sew this, and mark your movement.
During this Walkabout Quilt Along, I’ll be popping into the FB group for daily reminders as well – and of course prompts for you to share. Share your blocks (sewing progress) and blocks (walking progress). It will be so much fun seeing other quilters walking areas, don’t you think?
Now, I know many of us are not able to walk outside– weather, location, whatever… so this could be a simple lap around your sewing room, your living room, or trudging up your stairs. Whatever you do IT’S GREAT~!!! IT’S PERFECT!!!!
Don’t over think this and worry about the quilt police when it comes to your plan for the 30 minutes of movement. You decide what you can do – and it totally counts.

What about the extra white blocks that appear to be in the finished top and what about the edging? How much and how wide?
