Now that the Doll Bed is all ready for some bedding and blankets- today we will learn how to make doll bedding. You will want to start this process after the paint has dried to avoid little spots on your fabric {even though I know you are totally excited to get going on it!}.
Doll Bedding is super simple- you kind of repeat the same process for each part. Once you have it down, you will of course be sewing up a bunch so she can change her bedding often. We went with teal {that’s the girls room color} and with Minky fabric {super soft and snuggly}. We also dug around the sewing cottage and found some little checked flannel to go along with it.
First off you will need to measure the area you will be filling with doll bedding.
Make a Mattress for the Doll Bed:
For the mattress fabric we used minky fabric on both sides. It is a little bit sneaky and slips out of place, so if you use this pin it good!
- Measure the inside space and then add 1″ for seam allowances and puffy batting. The puffier the batting the taller it goes, and the shorter it ends up….so adjust accordingly.
- Cut your fabric the measurement that you need – you will need 2- front and back
- Cut the batting the same size. If you would like it poofy and thicker, cut 2 and layer them
- Sew all the way around the fabric, leaving a 3″ opening for turning and stuffing
- Snip the corners and turn right sides out
- Fold the batting so it will fit into the hole and stuff it inside. Adjust the batting so it lays flat again
- Hand stitch the opening closed
- Tie the mattress in a few spots {I did 6} to secure the batting
Make a Doll Blanket:
- Cut 1 front and 1 back for the doll bedding {using the same measurements you have from the mattress} We used minky on one side and flannel on the other….oh yeah, super cozy.
- Sew around all sides, leaving a 3″ opening for turning
- Snip corners and turn right sides out
- Close opening
- Sew all the way around the blanket 1/4-1/2″ from edge
Make a Doll Pillow:
- Cut 1 front and 1 back for the pillow {length will be the same as the mattress measurement- width, you can decide and audition}
- Sew around 3 sides, leaving the 4th shorter side open for turning
- Snip corners and turn right sides out
- Stuff somewhat firmly and close opening
Because the doll bed had a little trundle {the drawer} we made up a few extra pillows and blankets for it. To figure out the size, repeat the same process at the beginning with the mattress. Ours looks a little on the small side because we had this made prior to finding the doll bed. See the folded blanket on the end? This was sewn with both front and back being flannel.
The pink blanket was actually folded in half and sewn along the bottom and the bottom half of on long side. Makes a little sleeping bag! Love it.
p.s.– Eliza sewed everything in the trundle all by herself. Even a beginner sewer can make them!
