What is a layer cake?
Layer Cake precuts are 10-inch squares of fabric. They are the thing quilters, modern quilters, beginner quilters, or any level or quilter can use. These make for a very beginner-friendly quilt and are pretty typical easy quilt pattern.
They are 10″ squares that come in a set or fabric collection. You can also cut your own layer cakes using the 10″ ruler here.
They are great for really any kind of quilt. Easy to use, similar to a fat quarter – large nice square piece of fabric.
You may know about other types of precut fabrics – jelly rolls, charm packs, charm squares, fat quarter bundles, etc. These come on a variety of fabric and fabric lines – in your favorite colors, solid color or solid fabrics,
What size of quilt can you make with a layer cake?
The quilt size you can make with your layer cakes will depend on the quilt pattern you choose to recreate.
For example, if you were to sew all the blocks together to create a patchwork quilt top with the 42-10″ squares from one layer cake, you would make seven rows of 6 squares each.
The size of that quilt top would be 57″ x66 ½” which makes a great throw size quilt.
There are different ways you can use the layer cake squares. Mix and match the color scheme with different fabrics (if you cut the squares from your stash). You can make half-square triangles, a simple square quilt pattern (mentioned above), a cohesive quilt (using one fabric line). I find that they are beginner patterns featuring different sizes like a lap quilt, and add some extra fabric to get a larger king size quilt. Or they can be made into even tote bags, table runner, wall hangings, if you aren’t into making a full quilt.
These easy squares can be sewn into log cabin block, half square triangles, confetti star quilt pattern, – really, any fun traditional quilt blocks can be sewn using your favorite layer cake.

You can find precut fabric at most quilt stores. Some stores (like mine) don’t have a very big selection, so I tend to purchase them online.

Fat Quarter Shop – They carry all of the latest fabrics. I’ve used them several times. I use them for gift cards a lot as well. It’s so easy to shop from them!
Amazon – With free shipping and a lot of stores that are featured, this is kind of the mother load of selection.
