Let’s talk about a little sewing tool that can make a big difference: the compensating foot!
If you’ve never used one before, don’t worry—it’s much easier than it sounds, and it’s going to be your new best friend, especially when it comes to sewing down binding on a quilt.
I love using this foot because it helps keep everything neat and even, which can sometimes be tricky when you’re dealing with those layers of fabric and batting.
The compensating foot is designed to handle uneven thicknesses, which is exactly what we face when sewing binding onto a quilt.
It keeps the stitch line straight, even when one side of your fabric is thicker than the other. This is a lifesaver when you’re finishing off that binding and want a clean, professional look.
I’ll walk you through how to use the compensating foot to get perfect results on your quilt binding.
Whether you’re a beginner or just looking for a better way to finish your quilts, this tool is going to make your sewing life a whole lot easier! Let’s dive in and get that binding looking sharp.
Materials Needed:

1- Place the foot on the machine correctly and line up the binding. The thicker folded edge will be under the higher foot, with the lower foot on the outside of the binding
2- The needle will be in the correct position, the center of the foot. Make sure you buy the correct foot! My Juki machine doesn’t allow for the needle to move, so this has to be correct or the needle will hit the foot and break.
3- The edge of the binding will butt right up against that lower foot edge nicely
4- Sew slowly making any adjustments along the way if needed
