The Hera marker has become one of my absolute favorite tools in the sewing room, and I honestly can’t imagine quilting without it!
If you’ve never used one before, let me tell you, this little tool is a game-changer. It might look simple, but don’t be fooled—it’s a powerhouse for marking your fabric without any fuss.
I have one in my go-to bag for sewing at retreats or sewing days. It goes with me everywhere! I love it that much.

Four reasons why I think the Hera marker is the best.
1. No More Marks Left Behind
One of the best things about the Hera marker is that it doesn’t leave any actual marks on your fabric. That’s right—no ink, no chalk, no pencil lines to worry about. It simply creases the fabric in a way that’s easy to see when you’re sewing, but it won’t leave any permanent marks behind. This is such a relief when working with delicate or light fabrics where other marking tools might show up after washing. Plus, there’s no need to test your marking tool on scraps first—just grab your Hera and get to work!
2. It’s Super Precise
The Hera marker gives you clean, crisp lines, making it perfect for projects where accuracy is key. Whether you’re marking quilting lines, creating pleats, or guiding your seams, the Hera lets you create a clear path to follow. I find it especially handy when I’m doing straight-line quilting because I can mark my lines quickly and get sewing right away without worrying about smudging or fading.
3. Works on All Fabrics
Another reason I love the Hera marker is that it works on pretty much any fabric. I’ve used it on quilting cotton, flannel, and even thicker fabrics like denim or linen—it always does the job. Some marking tools can be tricky depending on the material you’re using, but the Hera is so versatile. It’s especially great for working with fabrics where traditional markers might not show up well.
4. It’s Simple and Lasts Forever
Let’s be honest, I love a tool that just works, and the Hera marker is about as low-maintenance as it gets. No refills, no ink, no special care—just a sturdy little tool that’s going to last you a long time. I’ve had mine for years, and it still works like the day I got it. Plus, it’s lightweight and easy to store, so it doesn’t take up much space in your sewing kit.
The Hera marker is one of those unsung heroes in the quilting world. It’s simple, effective, and makes marking fabric stress-free. If you haven’t tried one yet, trust me—it’s worth adding to your collection!
How to Use the Hera Marker for Quilting

This is what the marker looks like- super simple and not fancy at all

It has a chubby handle so it’s easy to grasp and use. You are using a little bit of pressure when you use this, so the handle is perfect for this.

The other end has somewhat of a sharp point or tip. It narrows at the end as well, which really allows for a nice crisp marked line.

1- Line up your ruler where you want it to go – you can use the degree angles on the ruler or simply lining it up from corner to corner on blocks will get you started. After lining it up, use the hera marker along the ruler edge, pressing hard and doing the same movement as cutting fabric

2- Move your ruler up or use a longer ruler, keep marking along the edge to the opposite end

3- Use the previously marked lines as a guide with your ruler. Determine the distance you want it and be consistent with this spacing until you have a whole quilt marked.
- Make sure you mark your quilt BEFORE you pin your layers together. This is a lot easier if you don’t have to dodge the pins all over the quilt top.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. How do I use a Hera marker?
Using a Hera marker is easy! Simply run the pointed edge along the fabric where you want to create a mark. The pressure creates a visible crease, which serves as a guide for your sewing or quilting lines. You can use a ruler for straight lines or freehand for curves and other designs.
2. Will the crease made by the Hera marker stay visible?
The crease is visible enough for you to follow while you’re working, but it’s not permanent. It will naturally fade as you handle the fabric or wash it. This makes it a great option for temporary marking without leaving behind any residue or marks.
3. Can I use the Hera marker on dark fabrics?
Yes! The Hera marker works on both light and dark fabrics, though the crease might be a little harder to see on darker fabrics. To make it more visible, try working under good lighting, or run the marker over the fabric a couple of times for a deeper crease.
4. Will the Hera marker damage my fabric?
No, the Hera marker is designed to be gentle on your fabric. As long as you apply reasonable pressure, it won’t tear or stretch the material. It’s especially great for delicate fabrics that might not respond well to traditional marking tools.
5. Can I use a Hera marker for marking curves?
Absolutely! The Hera marker is versatile and works for both straight and curved lines. You can freehand your curves or use templates and rulers for more precise curves, and the marker will still create a clear crease to guide your sewing.
6. Is the Hera marker good for hand quilting?
Yes! Many hand quilters love using the Hera marker because it creates clear lines without any risk of smudging or fading ink. You can mark your entire quilt top and get to hand quilting right away, without worrying about the lines disappearing before you’re finished.
