Quick Fixes for Smoother Quilting. Nothing derails quilting faster than puckers showing up out of nowhere—little ripples that appear when you start quilting or even while you’re piecing.
Before you toss the whole thing across the room, here are the simple tricks that help keep your quilt smooth and flat.

Start With Good Basting
Most puckers come from layers shifting while quilting.
Try:
- More safety pins if you are hand basting
- Spray baste for large quilts
- Working from the center out
- A walking foot for straight-line quilting
A secure quilt sandwich is the #1 cure.

Check Your Tension
If the puckering is happening during piecing, not quilting, it might be tension.
Try this:
- Rethread the top and bobbin
- Change your needle
- Test on a scrap sandwich
- Slightly loosen the top tension for free-motion quilting
Small tweaks make a big difference.
Keep Your Hands Light
Puckers also show up when fabric is pushed or pulled through the machine.
Let the feed dogs do the work—your hands should simply guide.
