Simple Fixes to Get Accurate Blocks Every Time. If your quilt blocks keep turning out too big, too small, or just “off,” you’re not alone.
This is one of the most common quilting headaches, and it usually shows up when you’re halfway through a project and suddenly nothing wants to line up.
Before you think you’re doing everything wrong, take a breath—block size issues almost always come down to a few simple things you can fix quickly.
Check Your Seam Allowance First
The ¼” seam is the quiet villain behind most block-size trouble. Even a thread or two too wide will shrink your block.
Try this quick check:
- Cut two strips 2″ wide.
- Sew them together using your regular ¼” seam.
- Press and measure the new width.
If the math doesn’t work, adjust your needle or use a seam guide/tape. There’s more info on how to check your 1/4″ seam allowance that you may find helpful.

Make Sure You’re Pressing, Not Ironing
This one is a tricky one! We are all used to ironing our clothes, which is the back and forth motion – but that can cause some issues with your fabric.
There is a difference between ironing and pressing and if you are having some issues, this is definitely one thing to look at.
Pressing sets the seam.
Ironing stretches the fabric.
If your blocks are subtly growing or shrinking, the iron may be the reason.
A quick up-and-down press works wonders for accuracy.

Square Up as You Go
Even when you sew perfectly, fabric shifts a little. Trimming block edges as you go keeps everything consistent, especially with triangles or bias edges.

Keep Your Cutting Sharp
If your initial cuts aren’t accurate, your block won’t be either.
Fresh blade. Stable ruler. Ruler lines (not mat lines).
It matters.
