A Simple Guide for Flat, Accurate Blocks. Pressing seams is one of those parts of quilting we don’t think much about at first. I know I didn’t — I used to run the iron over everything like I was flattening a shirt.
Then I wondered why my blocks looked a little warped or why my seam allowances never quite behaved. Turns out, pressing is a bigger deal than we give it credit for.
A well-pressed seam keeps your blocks accurate, your points sharp, and your quilt top smooth. And luckily, it doesn’t take anything fancy — just a few easy habits that make the whole quilting process smoother from start to finish.
If your seams tend to flip, stretch, or do their own thing, these simple tips will help tame them.

How to Press Quilt Seams so Your Blocks Stay Accurate
Pressing isn’t just smoothing fabric—it’s part of the accuracy process.
Press Down, Don’t Iron Sideways
Sliding the iron stretches the fabric.
A quick up-and-down press keeps things square.
Set the Seam First
Press the seam closed before pressing it open or to the side.
This melts the thread slightly and flattens everything beautifully.
Open vs. To the Side?
Both work—just be consistent.
Open seams flatten nicely; to-the-side seams nest easily.
