Learn how to make box corners for your sewing projects with this quick and simple method. Box corners are what give bags, pouches, and baskets that flat bottom so they can stand up and hold their shape.
If you’ve ever made a bag that just kind of flops over or doesn’t sit quite right, adding box corners makes a big difference. It’s one of those small techniques that instantly makes your project look more finished and a lot more useful.
The good news is—it’s really easy to do. Once you’ve done it once or twice, it becomes second nature and you’ll start adding it to all kinds of projects.
How Box Corners Work
Box corners are created by removing a small square from the bottom corners of your fabric and then sewing those edges together. This opens up the bottom of the bag and creates depth.
You’ll usually cut the same size square from each bottom corner of your fabric before sewing the side seams—or sometimes after, depending on the method you’re using.

Step 1- Measure and cut a square our of the two bottom corners of the bag. The measurement will depend on how wide you want the bottom of the bag to be.
- Measuring a 2″ X 2″ square, cut it out of each corner. This technique will box your corners.

Step 2- Open up that square and line up the sides and sew. You’ll notice that the side seam for the bag is right in the middle. This is correct. Depending on the fabric you are using, you can clip or pin to secure before sewing.
- Pinch the boxed corner together and use clips to hold
This is what the bottom of the bag will look like once those corners are finished.

How to Figure Out the Bottom Width
This is the part that can feel a little confusing at first—but it’s actually pretty simple.
The size of the square you cut determines the depth (or width) of the bottom of your bag.
Here’s the easy way to think about it:
Bottom width = 2 × the size of the square you cut
Example:
- Cut a 2″ square → your bag will have a 4″ wide bottom
- Cut a 3″ square → your bag will have a 6″ wide bottom
- Cut a 1½” square → your bag will have a 3″ wide bottom
So if you know how wide you want the bottom of your bag to be, just divide that number in half to figure out what size square to cut.
Tips for Clean Box Corners
- Make sure your seams line up neatly before sewing
- Press seams open or to one side to reduce bulk
- Use a ruler to mark your cut lines accurately
- Double check both corners are cut the same size
Taking a few extra seconds here helps everything come together nicely.
When to Use Box Corners
Box corners are great for:
- Tote bags
- Drawstring bags
- Zipper pouches
- Storage bins
- Project bags
Anytime you want your project to have structure and a flat bottom, this is the technique to use.
Box corners are one of those simple techniques that make a big difference in how your project looks and works. They take just a few extra minutes, but they give your bags and pouches that finished shape that stands up and holds more.
Once you understand how the sizing works, you can easily adjust any pattern to get the exact size you want. It’s a small skill—but one you’ll use over and over again.
