Quick notes about the fabric- there have been some discussion on what’s best. I used two cotton fabrics.
You’ll want to make them different so you know which side is the outside or inside. They are reversible. So you can choose.
There are some adjustments you can add- like add a pocket inside for filters and such, but I tried to keep it simple.
Materials Needed for 1 face mask:
1- 6″ X 8″ outside fabric
1- 6″ X 8″ inside fabric
2- 4 3/4″ X 2″ side binding
2- 6″ elastic

How to sew a face mask:
1- Lay right sides together outside and inside fabric
2- Sew on the LONG sides 1/4″ seam, repeat for both long sides
3- Turn right sides out and press
4- Sew on the LONG sides a finish seam 1/4″, repeat for both long sides
5- Fold in half the long way in the center- make a small 1/8″ – 1/4″ pleat and pin to secure
Repeat with a second pleat above and a third pleat below the center pleat
Repeat with the other side – check that your pleats are folded in the same direction
6- Lay right sides together the 4 3/4″ binding piece and side of mask – pin to secure
7- Fold the top extra binding pieced down, on top of the side of mask – pin to secure. Repeat with other side
8- Stitch 1/4″ seam from the top, placing the elastic just before stitching the pleats.
9- Continue to sew down the side, removing the pins along the way- before the end, place the end of the elastic in place and fold up the extra binding piece
10- Turn the binding piece to the right side and press the sides
11- Turn at a diagonal the corner down and fold one time 1/2″, making a triangle
Fold 1/2″
12- Fold again 1/2″ covering the previous seam pin or use clips to secure
13- Stitch down 1/8″ from the edge making sure the elastic is out
