Helpful Assembly Tips (Read Before You Sew!)
1) Stage your pieces.
Lay everything out by row or quadrant. A design wall (or a sheet on the floor) keeps units from sneaking into the wrong spot.
2) Chain piece in sets.
Sew row segments in the same order for consistency. Clip rows together with a note (Row A, Row B, etc.).
3) Spin those seams (where possible).
Alternating/“spun” seams help intersections nest and lay flat—especially around four-patches and geese.
4) Measure borders to fit—don’t “sew and hope.”
- Measure the quilt center width in three places; average the numbers.
- Cut your top/bottom borders to that average; pin at quarters; then sew.
- Repeat for length and add side borders. This keeps your quilt square and ripple-free.
5) Press with purpose.
Finger-press first, then set seams with the iron. Press toward the darker fabric unless the layout suggests otherwise for nesting.
6) Keep points pointy.
When joining rows with points, pin exactly at the seam intersections. A dab of glue at the tip can keep it from shifting.

Backing, Quilting & Binding Ideas
Backing:
Piece your backing from stash—vertical seams work great. If your backing is scrappy, keep seams offset from the quilt top seams for less bulk.
Quilting:
- Edge-to-edge favorites: soft swirls, modern loops, or windy lines to echo “Crosswind.”
- Custom-look option: stitch in the ditch around stars, then add gentle curls or simple arcs in the background.
Binding:
- Try a stripey binding on the bias for movement.
- If your top is busy, a solid binding frames it beautifully.
- Don’t forget a label—mystery quilts deserve bragging rights!
Show & Tell + Replay
We’ll celebrate together at the Live Reveal Party in our Zoom room (replay will be posted in the course). Bring your top, your favorite block, and your best guess of when you finally saw the design emerge.
