Let’s learn how to make your temperature quilt blocks for January and learn how to paper piecing.
The video will walk you through the steps on putting your blocks together – with the paper piecing technique. You’ll need to gather your supplies, cutting your strips and sewing the blocks together. It’s not as hard as you think!
With the temperature quilt along you’ll be sewing up 4 blocks per month. Not that many and you should be able to keep up for the year.

Basic Steps to Paper Piecing:
- Select a Pattern:
- Choose a foundation paper piecing pattern. Many patterns are available online or in quilting books. Make sure the pattern is suitable for paper piecing.
- Cutting the Foundation Paper:
- Print or trace the foundation paper pattern onto the special foundation paper. Cut along the outer edges of the pattern.
- Prepare Fabric Pieces:
- Cut fabric pieces that are larger than the sections they will cover on the foundation paper. Ensure each piece covers the entire section with a seam allowance.
- Place Fabric for Section 1:
- Turn the foundation paper so the printed side is facing up. Place the fabric piece for section 1 on the unprinted side of the paper. Make sure it completely covers the section with a bit of extra fabric extending beyond the seam allowance.
- Place Fabric for Section 2:
- With the foundation paper still facing up, fold the paper along the line between sections 1 and 2. Trim the fabric for section 2 to a 1/4-inch seam allowance beyond the fold.
- Sew Along the Line:
- Place the fabric for section 2 right sides together with the fabric for section 1. Sew directly on the line between sections 1 and 2.
- Press the Seam:
- Open the fabric for section 2 and press the seam with an iron. Trim any excess fabric beyond the seam allowance.
- Repeat for Subsequent Sections:
- Continue working in numerical order, adding fabric pieces and sewing along the lines until you complete all the sections on the foundation paper.
- Trim to Final Size:
- Once all sections are sewn, trim the entire block along the outer edges of the foundation paper, following the pattern’s guidelines.
- Remove the Paper:
- Gently tear away the foundation paper from the back of the block. The perforated lines from sewing make this process easy.
- Press the Finished Block:
- Press the finished block to set the seams and create a flat surface.
- Repeat for Additional Blocks:
- If your pattern requires multiple blocks, repeat the process for each one.
