This next Make & Take Monthly project is one I’m really excited to share with you. It’s been in the works and sideline for around 10 years. Just kind of sitting there…waiting it’s turn. Well, this is the month it gets out there to YOU!
The Iron Caddy is practical, travel-ready, and one of those things you don’t realize you need until you have it—and then you use it all the time. It’s designed specifically for quilters who take their irons on the go, whether that’s to retreats, classes, or sew days with friends.
This pattern (along with all Make & Take Monthly projects) is available inside the membership, and PW+ members get full access as part of their benefits.
If you love quick, useful projects that make your sewing life easier, this one is going to be a favorite.

Iron Caddy Sewing Pattern – Travel-Friendly & Quilter-Approved
If you’ve ever packed your iron and thought, there has to be a better way, this project is for you. The Iron Caddy is a soft-sided, quilted travel bag designed specifically for carrying your iron safely to retreats, classes, sew days, or even just from room to room at home. It’s practical, cute, and one of those projects you’ll wonder how you lived without.
This bag is lined with Insul-Brite, which helps contain heat so it doesn’t transfer to the outside of the bag. That means you can pack up a warm iron and not worry about scorching your car seat, table, or tote. It also has a wide opening, making it truly drop-in-and-go—no wrestling your iron in or out.

What Makes This Iron Caddy So Handy
The shape is inspired by a classic bowling bag, with slightly curved sides and boxed corners so it sits flat and stable when set down. Those boxed corners also give it enough room for full-size and travel irons without feeling bulky.
Inside, there’s a dedicated pocket for the cord, which keeps it tucked away and separated from the iron. That little detail makes a big difference—no tangled cords and no cord pressed up against heat. A simple button closure at the top keeps everything contained while you’re on the move.

Skill Level & Construction Notes
This is a confident beginner project with just enough “interesting bits” to keep it fun. There are a few steps that might feel a little tricky—mainly around the shape and layers—but nothing wild. The video walks you through each step clearly, including construction, boxing the corners, and finishing it up cleanly.
If you’re comfortable sewing bags or want to stretch your skills just a bit, this is a great one to try. Take it slow, follow along with the video, and you’ll be just fine.
Perfect For…
- Quilt retreats and classes
- Sew days with friends
- Travel irons or full-size irons
- Keeping your ironing setup neat and portable
- Handmade gifts for your favorite quilter
This Iron Caddy is one of those useful projects that earns its spot in your sewing space—and then ends up going everywhere with you. Cute, practical, and made to be used.
