If you have a lot of half square triangles to make, the half square triangle paper is going to be your life saver!! You are going to love how quick and easy this makes sewing HST. It’s kind of like a triangles on a roll cheat sheet for quilters.
You’ll be layering your fabric, right sides together with the paper and then following the arrows – sewing on the dotted lines.
It’s super simple and your HST turn out nearly perfect!
You’ll be able to whip up a bunch in no time using the paper method.

Depending on the size you need, there are a variety of sizes you can choose from. They all follow the same process.
I am using the 3″ finished size.
Quilting Tips –
- Sew on the dotted lines
- Use a smaller stitch length so you can tear away the paper easily
- The process is the same as paper piecing

How to Use Half Square Triangle Paper

1- Read the info on the triangle paper for quilters. It will tell you what size of strip you need to cut as well as what the finished size of the half square triangle will be

2- Lay right sides together your two fabrics and place the paper on top

3- Pin to secure the layers

4- Take the layers to the sewing machine. Begin at one end in the center and place your needle on the dotted / dashed line. This is your stitching line. Follow the arrows and continue stitching on this line.

5- At the corner, leave your needle down and lift your presser foot to pivot

6- Continue stitching on the line until you have all the lines sewn

7- Cut on the vertical and horizontal lines only

8- Cut the squares apart on the vertical lines as well

9- Cut on the diagonal lines last to separate each half square triangle

10- Fold the paper and finger press

11- Hold one corner with a finger before pulling on the paper to remove it – the paper pulls on the stitches and you don’t want to loosen those stitches

12- Use a water pen – this works great as well

13- Continue removing all the paper

14- Square up your half square triangles. I use and love the Bloc Loc ruler

15- Finish squaring up the blocks to the correct size.
