Guest Designer Podcast Interview – Emily of Aunt Em’s Quilts

I’m not quite sure how long Emily and I have known each other….I’m kind of thinking a while though.

I believe I convinced her to help out in a round robin quilt along that I was putting together or a past mini quilt class. Can’t quite remember, but she was willing to go for it and I have been an admirer ever since.

About Emily:

I got my first sewing machine when I was ten. My mother patiently taught me how to sew. In high school I thought I would be a fashion designer, but life had other plans. I was blessed with three sons, who found my cute sailor suits and knickers less than desirable, so I started quilting.

I find the play with color and design challenging.  I love to take an old design and make it new again.

I love meeting, teaching and learning from other quilters. I have a wide range of patterns, classes and tutorials available.

 

About the project for the quilt group:

Having July for my month I thought a patriotic theme was appropriate. This design started while playing with a basic star block. I liked how combining the hourglass center with the flying geese it created four hearts as well as the star. I know summer is busy so I wanted something that would go together quickly. So the Stars and Stripes table runner was born.

5- fat eighths for stars

3- 1/8 yard cuts for strips

1/4 yard for background

1/3 yard binding

My mom gave me my first machine when I was 10. I’ve been sewing ever since.

What inspires you?

Taking something old and making it new again. Playing with a traditional block and seeing how I can mix it up.

Do you have a favorite notion?

Because I hate to cut. It is the necessary evil. I love my Accuquilt Go! I also love my Nifty Notions half square and quarter square rulers. Being able to cut squares, half squares, flying geese and quarter squares all from one strip is awesome.

Quirky Fun little thing about yourself:

My hubby calls me his hippie wife. He seems to think that my boho clothing choices combined with my quilting, gardening, and soap making hobbies make me a hippie. (I don’t know what my hobbies have to do with it.) That and I hate to wear shoes.

I have a few designs coming out in a couple of different quilt magazines. I just released four new patterns at market. Watch for them at your local quilt shop. They are also available at my Etsy shop. Looking forward to teaching at several quilt retreats.
