Today I am introducing you to Debbie– I have been kind of a long time follower of her. She is one talented gal when it comes to applique and making modern designed quilts.
I met her a few years back at quilt market and was over the moon when she decided to join the quilt group as a guest designer!
Her project that she is sharing with the members is a perfect place to start trying out a little bit of modern. The quilt is on the smaller side– like wall hanging or pillow…… just the right size I think! Sometimes it’s hard to think past traditional, but this will help you!
It’s a patchwork pieced quilt, so no applique or complicated things happening….it’s just all about design and possibly your quilting.
I’m more than excited to see how the members take the pattern and run with it!
Guest Designer // Debbie of Esch House Quilts
She has been one super busy gal this year…… her new book was released (it’s her first and I got to see the trunk show for it and it’s wonderful!), she’s been finishing up filming with Fons & Porters sewing show, has a part in an exhibit coming up at Quilt Fest is Houston in the fall and just finished up a charity challenge (year long project) as well as monthly minis. Phew!!!
Our chat was fun and I look forward to meeting up with her again in the future!
Feel free to listen to her interview (it’s not the same as what’s below!)
How did you get your start in sewing?
I’ve been sewing all my life. I started with garments and home dec and then started quilting about 14 years ago.
What inspires you?
Line and shape
Do you have a favorite notion?
I’m not much of a gadget junkie, so my favorites tend to be basics, but three of them are my Roxanne thimble, Fons and Porter washable graphite marking pencils and self-threading needles. And, of course, my Janome 7700!
Quirky Fun little thing about yourself:
I’m obsessed with the tiny house movement! While this time in my life is not right for such a thing, maybe one day! (Of course, I’d need a second tiny house for my quilting supplies :)).
What’s coming up that we can look forward to?
I’ll be one of the designers involved in a special exhibit for Robert Kaufman at the Houston International Quilt Festival! It should be a fun exhibit and I can’t wait to see it. I’m also attending QuiltCon in Savannah in February and am looking forward to that. I hope to see some of you there!
Where can you find her?
About the project for the quilt group:
I love working with lines! Even after writing a book about them, Lines by Design Quilts, I still have more I want to explore. This project is part of that process. I love making mini quilts as I can play with an idea and see if I like it or not. Most of them don’t become larger quilts, but some might!
Materials Needed:
1/2 yard background fabric
1/4 yard dark fabric
1/8 yard light fabric
batting 24″ x 24″
backing 24″ x 24″
usual sewing supplies
