What’s the Project? Puff quilts are soft, dimensional quilts made by individually stuffing the squares to create that fun, pillowy look. These free puff quilt patterns and tutorials show you several ways to try the technique, including traditional puff quilts, rainbow layouts, minky versions, and even a small doll quilt.
There are regular quilts—and then there are puff quilts. If you love a quilt that looks extra cozy before you’ve even touched it, this is one technique worth trying.
Puff quilts, sometimes called biscuit quilts or bubble quilts, are made a little differently than a traditional quilt. Instead of simply layering a quilt top with batting and backing, the individual sections are stuffed to create those soft, raised squares. It takes a little extra time, but that texture is what makes these quilts so much fun.
And they don’t all have to look the same. In this collection you’ll find rainbow puff quilts, ombré designs, a Trip Around the World-style layout, quilts made with cotton and minky, and even a design where only every other square is puffed.

What Is a Puff Quilt?
A puff quilt gets its signature look from individually stuffed sections that create a raised, cushion-like surface. You’ll typically use fabric for the squares along with batting or polyfill for the stuffing, then finish everything with a backing and binding.
Because of the extra fabric and filling, a finished puff quilt can be heavier and thicker than a traditional quilt. Keep that in mind when choosing the size you’d like to make.
Try the Technique on a Smaller Project
Not quite ready to commit to a full-size puff quilt? Start small.
The collection includes a doll-size puff quilt, which is a great way to learn how the squares are constructed and stuffed without making dozens and dozens of them. Once you get the hang of the technique, you can decide if a larger puff quilt needs to be added to your project list.
