We absolutely love our community members, but because we don’t live close by – it’s a little trickier to get to know them. With this member spotlight, we will sit down for a virtual chat with one of our community members and get to know them a little better.

Let’s get to know Bobbie Gerken!
Location – where in the world are you?
Orange, California
When did you complete your first project and what was it?
1992, Beach Quilt
What is on your bucket list when it comes to sewing / quilting?
To have a quilt studio with ample storage, logical set up of machines, ironing station, cutting area and a Longarm set-up so I can finish my own quilts. Hoping to move where I can have my own custom she-she’d to accomplish this.

What is the sewing /quilting project you are most proud of?
The Hocus Pocus Quilt I’m almost done with. Paper pieced and challenging.
Your best advice for quilters just beginning:
Get a 1/4” foot for your machine, a quality Rotary cutter, Aurofil thread and don’t be afraid to goof up. We all do it and it adds character and interest to your project. Most everything can be fixed or “decorated” to hide an error.
Where do you sew?
My Sisters. She has her own quilt studio. We sew, kibbutz, watch movies or listen to music while we sew, it has a fridge and bathroom and we get a LOT of uninterrupted sewing done. And my Brother-in-Love makes us snacks or does food runs, who doesn’t love THAT?

What are you currently working on?
Just finished a Valentines Day quilt and starting the Dutch Garden BOM tomorrow during Super Bowl.
What do you do when you are not sewing?
Take care of my MIL, read, Bible Studies and hand-cycle. Peer Visitor for the Amputee Coalition
