Curves + Scraps = A Quilt You’ll Want to Sew
Get ready to try a fresh, modern take on two classic quilt block styles! In this workshop, Michelle will share one of her favorite quilt patterns—a fun mash-up between a Half Square Triangle and a Drunkard’s Path block that creates movement, interest, and a playful modern look.
If sewing curves feels a little intimidating, don’t worry. This workshop includes step-outs, practical tips, and simple tricks to help make curved piecing feel much more approachable (and maybe even fun).
One of the best parts? This pattern works beautifully with scrappy fabric pulls. Dig into your stash, mix favorite fabrics, and discover combinations you may have never thought to put together. Whether you love coordinated scraps or a little playful variety, this project is a great excuse to finally use those fabrics you’ve been saving.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to:
• Sew curves with more confidence using simple tips and tricks
• Combine HSTs and Drunkard’s Path blocks for a fresh, modern look
• Pull fabrics from your stash for a scrappy quilt that still feels cohesive
• Follow step-by-step guidance to make the process easier and more enjoyable
This workshop is perfect for quilters who are ready to try something a little different, learn a new technique, and sew up a quilt that feels both modern and stash-friendly.

A little Bit About Michelle:

How did you get started in quilting?
While I learned the basics of how to use a sewing machine and follow a garment pattern from my mother growing up, I didn’t learn to quilt til I went to college and learned from a friend. Then life got busy, and my quilting hobby went dormant until 2018 when I started piecing quilts again.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration just about everywhere – from museums to the ventilation cover in my yoga studio!
What are your favorite parts of quilting?
Do I have to pick just one? Probably the design process, but I love planning the quilting scheme as well!
Do you have a favorite notion?
Yes! I love the Circle Savvy ruler by Creative Grids for cutting my curved pieces, and I couldn’t get through pressing without my strip stick and my clapper.

Tell us about a project you are currently working on
I enjoyed the Color Theory class I took at a local community college a few years ago so much that I got the book “Interaction of Color” by Josef Albers, and a FQ bundle of all the Kona colors. This year I started making quilt blocks working through the color exercises described in Albers’ book, and this has helped me start seeing color in a completely new way!
I’ve challenged myself to use every color from that FQ bundle at least once in one of these Albers inspired blocks…as of June 1, I’d used 81 of the 365 colors, so I still have a way to go!
Have anything fun coming up?!
I’m excited to share my off-label approach to using the Circle Savvy ruler at a live virtual event hosted by Creative Spark on July 16th this year. And, if you plan on attending the Houston International Quilt Festival this year, I’ll be teaching there as well!

Give us a fun quirky something about yourself
While I love gardening outside, I have a tendency to kill every houseplant I’ve ever had!
What are you doing when not quilting?
I love gardening with California native plants, cooking, and practicing yoga.
