crappy Owl Wall Hanging
Apparently I had a thing for owls. And really… I’m still okay with it.
This little owl wall hanging is a fun project when you want to sew something cute without committing to an entire quilt. The background is made with strips of blue fabric stacked together, then the owls, branch and leaves are added on top.
t’s also very scrap friendly. Those little pieces that aren’t big enough for much of anything? Owl eyes. Wings. Bellies. Leaves. Suddenly they’re useful again.
And don’t worry about making everything perfectly polished. Some of the appliqué pieces have extra layers and raw edges that are meant to ravel a bit. A little scruffy around the edges is part of the fun with this one.
A Great Beginner Appliqué Project
If you’ve been wanting to try appliqué without tackling something huge, this is a good place to start.
The pieced background is simple, the appliqué shapes are manageable, and the smaller finished size means you can play with quilting designs without having an entire bed quilt staring back at you.
The original pattern even includes quilting ideas drawn right onto the design to give you a place to start.
This patterns is really super easy and a great pattern for beginners. The background are simple stacked coins of your blue fabric strips. The pattern has the templates and the machine quilting ideas drawn on the quilt.
Some of the applique was done with a few extra layers. The edges will ravel and rag a bit to add a little bit of fun and interest..

Don’t feel stuck with blue.
Pull colors that work with your sewing room or fall decorating. Go completely scrappy. Give each owl its own personality. Use prints for the wings and belly or make those eyes just a little bit ridiculous.
Owls can handle it.
