Machine Quilting with HMQS

machine quilting with HMQS

My Machine Quilting Story:

I started off my ‘machine quilting life’ with an in the cabinet White sewing machine.  After I ran that one to the ground and was no longer able to stitch properly, I upgraded to a Janome sewing machine.  I do love my Janome. It is sooo simple and easy to use. Not a whole lot of fancy stitches {15 I think}, but it’s just what I need.  After sewing up some quilts and thinking about a quilter I took a look inside the wallet and found it empty……yeah.

I decided that I was going to be doing my quilting all by myself and use the Janome to do it.  This lasted a few years and that machine did a wonderful job even though it doesn’t drop the feed dogs and isn’t too fancy.  I learned and quilted basic shapes and even went for some more gutsy designs.  During one year, I decided it was the year of me.  I would tell everyone I am doing this because it’s the year of me.  I bought this because it’s the year of me.  Well- while that ‘year of me’ I ran into an local add {ok, not really ran into it- I was hovering around for it} that had a WOW quilting machine with a frame and everything for $1000.  This is a considerable amount of money, but I could quickly make the expense after I started quilting for others.  The machine is definitly not one to brag about {the company has since designed better machines} and there is no stitch regulator, computer moniter…nothing fancy.  But it worked for me!

I still quilt on that machine and do some occassional quilting for others.  I sometimes curse at it- and it’s name –the screaming banche– isn’t attractive….but it tells the truth.

Even before I purchased the screaming banche {during the year of me} I had attended HMQS.  I have had the opportunity to attend quilt market a few times, but this show I tell you is one of my favorite.  There are soooo many machines to give a try on! If you are in the market for a standard machine, an embroidery full computerized machine, long arm quilting machine or any kind of accessory to go along with it, this is the show for you.  It isn’t too big that you get lost, but just large enough you can wander for a good couple of days and still find something new to see.

Along with the machine mall with vendors they have a wonderful display of quilts.  These quilts are magnificent!  Some are show winners from quilt fest, some are beginners, some are even teens and younger.  I think that my favorite part of it is reading the descripts of the quilts and my all time favorite is when they say ‘machine quilted on a standard machine’.  Meaning, they had quilted that blue ribbon beauty with a standard machine and not a long arm!

This is the best show to find inspiration around.  If you are in town {salt lake city} this is a must stop off–
