Kitchen Table Binding

I don't know about you— but i am not a big fan of binding. I find myself all humped over if i am sitting …eventually my head is in my lap. Because I bend over the binding. Do you do that?

So…..this weekend I decided to just hog up the kitchen table with my balloon quilt and finished the binding! weeeee.

It's not the most comfortable place to sit and bind for a bit of time….but it does keep the quilt free to move around and not weigh me down.

for some reason i miss-calculated the binding length and have quite a few strips hanging around extra……hmmmm.

Do you have a favorite spot to bind?

I need to buy me some Christmas fabric

Today i put out the first pattern for the Christmas Spirit workshop —and after showing off the quilt to a few others, the consensus is- yes, it looks like Christmas Baubles, but no it is not christmas fabric.

The pattern is a wall hanging size and it makes up super quick. Extra large circles + little circles = christmas balls. you know. the ones that hang from the tree? See it now?

So, please if you are in the workshop– will you make it out of true Christmas fabric? You will probably get it done before I do, but i do hope to have one before next christmas.

Tag Quilt New Pattern!

It of course incorporates the 'cranky' method of piecing…… just a little bit. Not too cranky. Plus of course there is raw edge applique and my new favorite– black thread machine drawing!

It actually makes up pretty quick and is a great pattern for beginners. Can you see the kitty counting? lol

The little counting kitty is an extra addition to the pattern— I just couldn't resist.

The pattern is being sent to a few local quilt stores {I am going to make this a better habit!} + the pattern will be in the next issue of The Sewing Cottage. After that it will be available online to purchase on it's own {the better deal being the magazine issue}

Quilt Top Roundup– yeehah!

so on my list last week was to dig out the christmas quilts that were supposed to be done for everyone last year and cut some batting for them…..what that turned into was a –let's dig through everything and find ALL quilt tops that are ready for some stitching fun! wwwoooaaa Nelly.

It wasn't that hard to dig– they have been unpacked and sitting on a shelf {ok. a few shelves} out in the Sewing Cottage for a bit now… not sure if i can admit how long some of them have waited for this moment.

Isn't this the worst photo ever?!! Take a look at that scarry pile!! yikes. I can't believe I ever let it go this far! ugh. I used to be sooo good…..when i finished a quilt i quickly quilted it…that was even when I used my Janome sewing machine. Now that I have the big stitcher you would think I would keep up on these tops better.

I drug my monster roll of quilt batting — it doesn't say how large it is, but is the super big rolls you see at the quilting places –wholesale is $100 or so.

Anyways– after dragging it out from under the quilting table….into the house….and laying each quilt out, cutting the batting and refolding it with the batting…I now have a MONSTER pile of quilt tops!!!

They are still hanging out in the living room, next to the EMPTY spool of batting. Yup. The whole roll. Gone. Just like that. I am not sure where I am going to put these– they won't fit back on the shelves.

So— one quilt at a time, right? Right. That is the plan. The pile includes 5 that are getting done for Christmas…so that will help. Won't it?

Are you dying to know how many there are in that big pile? I bet. 30 tops. I know! that would take over a year if i did 2 per month.

The next problem after they are all quilted— is what am i going to do with them all?! hee hee

11-11-11 eight

So today is the fun day of the year when it is 11-11-11….weeee so what in the world is eight doing at the end of it?

Well, that is what the youngest- Eliza is turning on Sunday. That's right 8.

And you know what 8 brings in our family don't you? A new Quilt!!! double weeeee.

I let her suffle through all the unquilted quilt tops and she chose this one.

I think it fits her just great. Shoes— and a pet….so her!

and- good thing she isn't into being nit-picky with quilts– other wise she would notice the big long black string behind the fence stitchery! What a sloppy stitcher I am–

Quilted or non-quilted?

That is the question for this week— I have this here new pattern coming out:

"Tag"

and I am wondering — does it matter if the quilt on the front of the pattern is quilted?

Not because I am a slacker– just that I could get the pattern out sooner, if i didn't have to wait for my quilting time frame {which right now is loaded with others quilts} and I just wanted to know what you thought? Do you cringe when you see a pattern in the quilt store that shows a non-quilted quilt on the front? I have both ways right now…and thought I'd ask.

This little 'counter' is going to be included with the baby sized quilt pattern.

I am starting to like this size of quilt! It is so much easier to finish!

Super thanks for your opinions!! and yes, the fabric is what i just bought last week! Couldn't resist whipping a new idea up! I have a dog one too–just a bit different– oh yeah.

and– just for kickers in my pants….. how about the snowing weather this weekend?! Where am i going to take my photos now? The cottage door will be all wet…..

Round Robin Row Quilt Border Row 8 with Patchwork Posse

Ok….. this quilt is turning out totally wonderful!!! I am sooo excited to share what I came up with for this row. And, for some reason we skipped a pattern. Did anyone else notice that? The patterns are usually going out every other monday…but there was a jump in dates. Sometimes I totally wonder where my brain is! I know, it's behind my eyes…..but clearly it wasn't on while looking at calendar dates. Enough about the brain….let's get on with the totally cute row!

What do you think? love it like i do? oh yeah! The handles haven't been totally attached– so they are still a bit floppy.

The May basket pattern is quite easy and you get a 2 fer! So, piecing is relitivly quick. Give it a try–

and can I tell you a secret? I finished the center of the top!eeep. i know.

All of you who are a little hesitant of sewing with us because you don't trust the rows— let me tell you. No. Let me show you it always works out wonderfullly!

now, before all you smart girls point it out– yes, I changed the 'row' from horizontal to vertical. It was wider than longer so it works out better this way. And, yes, as you can see {because you are smart like that} I sneaked in an extra row– but it really wasn't It was the little triangles left from the Zig-zag row! I love extra goodies like that! All I did was sew a second line and cut in the middle….one 1/2 triangle. one zig. Repeat for other side.

I also decided NOT to add a sashing in between each row. It is quite busy, but I sort of like it….so there. I will be adding I think- a red stop border and then an outer bigger border. You will find out on Sept. 22nd what it looks like.

Now for winners!! So– who is the winner of the Workshop this month? well– there wasn't any new photos!!! How can there be sooo many of us sewing along and noone posting any new photos?

I will hold onto this free workshop until next time and double it!! So– 2 free workshops {you choose the workshop}— but there has to be new photos!! Come on girls. Sew it up.

Now that you are seeing part of the finished quilt top are you ready to catch up? I took saturday and few hours and look at what I got done-

Queen Size Quilts are Big

I mean, I realized this a long time ago, but when it has been awhile since you have 1– made one or 2- quilted one…you kind of forget.

So, this weekend during Labor Day I was quilting away for Janna…..and the clothes quilt that she made for Fred….or really Fred's wife.

After quilting this I also had to add the binding and a little label. Yes, forgetting again the super sized quilt all piled up on the table to add the binding onto it.

and forgetting that even though it is large— really is it that big that I cut wayyyy to much binding for it?

Close-up of the front and the back….did a meander in the white border with a chicken track star in the center of the log cabin. There was sooo much interfacing and the seams where fat– so i totally had to stay away from the seams. Interfacing was used because some of the fabric was knit shirts, ties, and other stretchy fabrics.

I love clothes quilts. They are so personal and wonderful. You see what their style is…kind of interesting that way. Janna says she has 3 more coming for christmas finishes……lucky for me they are twin sized!

Trunk Show Tuesday with the Color Wheel

I went to quilt group a few weeks ago and they had a guest speaker come and show us how to use the Color Wheel for deciding on colors for quilts. It was fantastic!! I couldn't believe how much color affects the quilts and their outcome. No, like seriously it was crazy! After looking at the quilts and the fabrics and the combinations based on the color wheel….i have found that i am not really great at decisions! hee hee. I find that my combinations are not found on the color wheel {not sure where they come from}. My eyes like different things than others. I am re-thinking a few new quilts and inviting the color wheel to do a bit of consulting for me.

During the night, she let us help her pick colors that looked absolutely stunning together. I unfortunatly didn't take any photos– she was a superb needle turn applique girl too! man.

But I decided to give you a quick lesson and have a trunk show of color quilts which show off some of the combinations. Super fun!

First a quick lesson on what kind of color combinations you can get with the color wheel:

Complementary Colors: Those colors located opposite each other on a color wheel.

Analogous Colors: Those colors located close together on a color wheel.

Carolyn is a gal from our quilt group who did a bit of a display/talk on what to do with those quilt panels. Now, I have to tell you that I am not a bit fan of quilt panels…but really after seeing this bit I don't mind them so much.

Quick notes about Joanna~

I started sewing a little bit less than a year ago. My first project was a baby quilt for my friends baby girl. I started visiting websites with sewing projects, learned about quilting, joined sewing community on forum and I fell in love with sewing. With those beautiful fabrics and the possibilities in which you can use them. For first few months I learned how to sew and was basing on other people's designs. Now, I found my own way and try to develope in this new direction.

I really don’t like 12 inch blocks

do you? I find that they are big! Too Big!! When piecing them, they seem even bigger. I know that there are a lot of applique quilt blocks out there in the 12 inch range, but for me—- no likey likey.

I made a few– and I don't like them. They look a bit weird to me. not sure why. It hasn't done anything to me…… i just don't like it.

I prefer the 9 inch block…….they just look right. You know?

So, 9 inchers I did— finished center. Still working on the border.

The name of this here quilt is going to be — "Knitters Sampler". I know I always have weird ideas….and quilts….but they are ok aren't they?

What do you think? Have an opinion on the perfect size of block? What is your favorite? Or what is the one size you absolutetly Don't Love?

Quick update on the button making. Here are mine–

The pan was over taken by other little workers of course……they thouroughly enjoyed themselves though. Take a look at all the goodness!

Trunk Show Tuesdays with Bing

Now, Today I have a bit of something new. I am going to show you how to search for your very own trunk show!! {this is only because I have had no takers on sharing their trunk shows. Anyone?} But, don't get all sad and irritated with me now. This is fun stuff!! I promise.

But, just in case you are like me and take a bit of time before the 'tricks' take root I'll let you in on what I just found out.

Did you know that when you go to bing imagas you can surf the web by images? Oh, yeah.

Today, you will be searching for you own trunk show via BING!!!!

So, go here: http://www.bing.com/images?FORM=Z9LH5 It is the search for bing images.

Type in something fun– like Block of the Month. Quilt block, oh….. Cranky quilt and wait….wait….. a WHOLE PAGE OF PHOTOS PULLS UP!!!

Now, you might think… So what? What's the big deal about that? Well. I'll tell you – at least I get all excited about it.

Click on the Photo you just love— It will pull up this little gallery window and give you the link to where that photo is from!! eeep. I know! Surfing!! weeee

Ok. settle down. There's more.

If you click on the photo again it will pull up another page with that photo at the top, with a little scroll bar with more photos from the previous page + If you look at the bottom of the page it shows the site!!!! YAY!!! SO you can take a peak at the post that the photo comes from + you can click on their header and update the blog to the newest post. I know!! The time that gets lost!

The Pile just doesn’t shrink!

I of course wouldn't be speaking of job piles, or kid piles, or UFO piles….I am speaking of my wonderful collection of 30's that I got awhile back. What a steal that was…and it just keeps getting better!

While making the list of wonderful Block of the Months– i found myself having to choose from the big wonderful list. Oh my goodness what to choose!

After someone mentioned that Bunny Hill had hers up– I had to run as fast as the internet would go and take a look at what it was. What it was, was totally doable.

I know i don't have any of my fabric stashed here. Just a few bags full of pieces used to finish up some projects. Guess what? I have enough. Oh yea. Of course that means that shopping for some might stink….but I am sure I can come up with an excuse to go and take a 'look'.

Do your piles of fabrics do that? Do they not get any smaller? Or do they seem to grow? Even though i have made 2…yes, 2 quilts out of it. They aren't huge– but I still have plenty to get this new Block of the Month out of it!
