Quilting Gallery Autumn Block- Delectable Mountains

Today i am sharing a block for ~~~~

Glorious Autumn Block Party and Super Deals for Quilters

Thanks for the invite Michele- and welcome to all visitors!

Quick note about what the Autumn Block party is all about:

Over 15 weeks, 45 designers will create 12" blocks for the Glorious Autumn Block Party. These blocks will be featured, three per week, on the Quilting Gallery site starting September 4th. In addition to the blocks, there will be Super Deals for Quilters from our favourite online retailers. Also, be sure to check each designer's post, as many will be offering give-aways on their own site that everyone can participate in.

I totally struggled with this block! What to sew, design…whatever.  I thought about basket, tree….i made a beehive, a dredle maple leaf….a few practice delectables.

Then i finally figured it out! phew.  what a journey for one block. lol

This ends up as a 12 1/2" X 12 1/2" unfinished quilt block.

Now, typically the delectable mountain is a rectangular shaped quilt block.  Not at all square. After a bit of trial and error I finally came up with a solution to get it back to the square– by adding a strip right in the middle.  Just looks like a super tall mountain!

It really is super easy to sew…. super thanks to Quilting Bloggers for featuring my block!

Let's get to the tutorial and sew up your own autumn delectable mountain quilt block!

Cut 4 squares 7" X 7"  you will need one dark and one light– mountain and background.  I used 2 different lights and 2 different darks

Cut 4 — 2 1/2" X 6 1/2" strips from the dark fabric {2 of each dark fabric}

1) Draw a line from corner to corner on the wrong side of the lighter fabric

2) Lay one light square on dark square

3)  Sew on each side of the drawn line 1/4" from the line

4)  Cut down drawn line.  You will have 4 half square triangles

5) Square up each block to 6 1/2" X 6 1/2"

6)   Lay the half square triangles right sides together- lights and darks are opposite each other

6)  Cut them into 1 1/2" X 6 1/2" strips- make sure you are cutting the correct direction!

7)  Re-arrange the order of the strips so they will make a delectable mountain

8)  Sew dark 2 1/2" strips to the tallest mountain

9)  Layout the 4 blocks and sew together

For a scrappy version you can mix up the strips with each other….or you can lay them out in a different direction for a V look.  You play and find out what works for you.

Thanks for sewing along with me!  I have loved all the blocks that the other designers have come up with– I love Autumn and this is a great way to celebrate it!
