Interview with Cori- Chitter Chatter Designs

Cori Blundt of Chitter Chatter Designs

Last year while walking through Utah Quilt Guilds– Annual Quilt Fest— I ran into Cori. She is truely a delightful gal!! Her quilts were all hanging and she is like the master at applique. In fact a few months ago she posted a wonderful tutorial and how-to applique I had to post it here.  She was also just featured in an Australian sewing magazine. yay for her!!

Cori has over 22 patterns available for purchase and
she focuses on needle turn applique. That is her love and expertise.
Her first published pattern was in Australian Homespun issue 76,
which came out mid Feb.
Chitter Chatter Designs will be here during the month of June
and sharing a new exclusive pattern just for us!

Anywhosies— She is the Guest Designer for June for members. She has decided to share a wonderful pattern for a wrist pincushion.  Great pattern for beginners and check out the pins! Those are her daughters job…they sell them too.

Isn't it so cute?

Here is her interview:

So how did you get your crafty start? I was encouraged to create in the field of quilting by my mother. She insisted I use my talents in this area. I have had a long love affair with fabric and started collecting as a teenager.

How long have you been crafting? I have always been a crafter. My mother insisted we learn a new craft, or finish one crafted item every summer. I suppose she did that to avoid the popular summer saying as a kid “I’m BOARD!” Embroidery was something I loved as a girl. I did a lot of embroidered kitchen towels. I have always been a doodler, I love to draw too.

What are your goals or dreams in regards to your craft/sewing/business? Goals… well I have achieved my first goal, which was to make the trip to Quilt Market, there are many left on the list. My dream would be to design some fabric lines, struggling with finding the right color and print has always been a challenge for me.

What or who inspires you? I find that most everything can become inspiring if you change your point of view to see it that way. I am most inspired by my mother and kids. My mother always shares great ideas that inspire my creative side. She knows what interests me and she is also the one who nurtures my love of nursery rhymes even now. Kids have such a wonderful imagination and the cutest little drawings. I find that listening to them also inspires me to create and draw.

When you are not involved in your craft/business- what can you usually be found doing? I am usually found doing laundry, and cleaning up after the latest disaster my five little ones are constantly making. I love old movies, and occasionally I spend some time watching them with my girls. I love to do home improvement projects, but my husband doesn’t like it much. I usually tear it up, and he has to put it back together… that is why our kitchen is still in shambles two years after I destroyed it! I will have to make some time to fix it this year!

Tell us about your current projects. My current project is trying to fill orders from market! As for my appliqué, I am really excited about my strawberry quilt project; a table top quilt with reds and greens. I am also working on a quilt called “American ANTtitude” a spin off of the original, and still trying to make some progress on my Nursery Rhyme quilt which is so detailed it may take a few more years to complete at least!

How many UFO’s do you have? UFO’s? Well, I have a butterfly quilt that has been abandoned for a year now, other than that I have finished most everything that I start, the problem with me is the fabric collecting! I have a lot! I do have a quilt that I started as a young mother, an orange peel design that I struggled with. It is just considered permanently abandoned… the piecing is quite terrible!

How much time do you spend on your craft? You know, I never stop! I am always found working on something. I am so hopelessly addicted to stitching that I am embarrassed to say! Truth be known, it is probably close to 40 hours a week!

What's your favorite color? Blue, but my weakness is a red and white quilt!

Do you have a favorite Notion? Notion.. hmmmm…. My current love is BOHIN needles and a loop turner, but Perfect Circles are on the top of the list!

What sewing machine do you use? I use a Bernina 440 QE.

What music do you usually listen to when you create? I am stuck with whatever the kids are listening to at this time in my life! I love Weezer, and Muse, they are my favorites.

Do you also cook? Of course!…just not very well! I can make a pretty mean Navajo Taco, and my husband will do pretty much anything for one of my cinnamon rolls. My husband is the amazing cook in this family.

Do you have a favorite pattern/project? My favorite is and probably always will be the first quilt I put into a pattern, “ANTtitude”.

What do you hate to do? I hate to make a mistake on my pattern instructions! It makes me feel so bad that I helped to mess up someone’s hard work!

What craft have you yet to try but haven't – and why haven't you done it yet? Witchcraft! My husband thinks I would be good at it.

How did you come to start your business? I was in fear of crying all day when my youngest went to school. I thought this would be a good diversion. My kids drive me crazy, but I am the type of person who always needs to be doing something. This business has really helped me to feel like I have a focus and something to offer others.

How do you keep your life balanced between family and work, especially if you work at home? I decided to just involve them! Hence the PINcess Pin idea. That way I get to spend family time while working. I have had the best of moments while busily at work with my loved ones, as a kid and a parent.

Do you ever feel like you are in a rut or get burned out? I have yet to experience the burn out. It seems I have so many ideas and just not enough time to finish them! I draw them up or write them down, so that when I struggle I will have some inspiration from this most inspiring time of my life so far.

I am not sure what I like the best about Cori— the fact that she keeps all her ideas too and uses them for later times when nothing is sparking the creativity, or that she involves her kids in her work….or that she spends 40 hours a week sewing, designing and stitching! Oh, my gosh I am sooo not alone in this world! yay! Thanks Cori for sharing yourself and a wonderful pattern with the group. Go check out her blog for more info on her and her patterns. She has some great stuff!
